Two people arrested for assault by Yellowknife police

Two people have been arrested by Yellowknife RCMP following two reports of assaults the police believe are both linked to Yellowknife’s drug subculture.

The first incident occurred shortly before midnight on July 22 when police received a report that a person had been stabbed at a downtown encampment. Police arrived to find the victim seriously injured. They were transported to hospital and were unable to speak with police for several days due to their injuries.

Just before 6:00 am on July 23, a home invasion was reported on Bigelow Crescent, where the occupant was assaulted by two individuals who escaped through a window. The victim was also transported to hospital for their injuries.

Further police investigation into these incidents led police to conclude that the same individuals were responsible for both assaults and that these incidents were linked to the illicit drug trade in Yellowknife.

On July 29 and 30 police were able to locate and arrest both suspects. Both have been charged with assault and breaking and entering, among several other crimes.

Both suspects appeared for a bail hearing and have been remanded into custody.
