GNWT and Yellowknife collaborating on encampment clean ups

The Government of the Northwest Territories and the City of Yellowknife are advising residents that encampment clean ups at three Yellowknife sites will continue bi-weekly beginning today.

Over the next eight weeks, clean ups are planned for sites located near the Prince of Wales Heritage Centre, Norseman Apartments and a GNWT-owned parking lot on 49th Street.

The city is reminding residents that unsolicited donations at encampment can contribute to litter and environmental concerns as encampments are not equipped to sort or store donated goods. Those who wish to support people experiencing homelessness should instead donate through local organizations.

The GNWT says that they acknowledge that encampments are often used by individuals seeking shelter, and that these clean up efforts must be undertaken with compassion and respect. Outreach teams will be working with individuals at these sites to provide notice and identify available supports.

These efforts are part of a coordinated approach by the GNWT and the City of Yellowknife to address health and safety concerns, remove waste, and ensure safe and accessible public spaces.
