GNWT alerts Canvas users of security breach

The Government of the Northwest Territories is notifying users of the Canvas learning management platform of a security incident involving Canvas’ parent company, Instructure.

The GNWT was informed earlier this month of a cybersecurity incident which allowed unauthorized access to information associated with Canvas accounts.

The territory says they immediately began working with the Office of the Chief Information Officer to assess the scope of the break and to mitigate the damage from this incident.

Some of the compromised information includes names, email addresses, and enrollment or professional development training information. No passwords were compromised, and the Canvas platform does not contain financial or other personal information.

The territory believes that approximately 1700 people, including NWT teachers, education staff, and GNWT employees, may have been affected.

Affected users are encouraged to be vigilant for suspicious emails and to avoid clicking unknown links, and to change their passwords if used across multiple platforms.

Instructure’s investigation into the incident remains ongoing, and the GNWT is continuing to monitor the situation.
