Team NT concluded this year’s Arctic Winter Games in Whitehorse with an outstanding showing across the events, with record-breaking performances, numerous gold medal wins, and a strong overall medal count.
According to the official medal tally, Team NT won 41 gold, 30 silver, and 27 bronze medals, for a total count of 98, putting the team in fourth place overall, out of the eight participating groups.
“Our youth demonstrated leadership, respect, and the spirit of northern cooperation, qualities that matter long after medals are awarded,” said Minister Vince McKay.
One of Team NT’s standout performances was in the speed skating event, winning four gold medals across the U15 and U19 1000-metre events, and setting two new Arctic Winter Games records in the process.
The team also had a standout performance on March 12, bringing home 12 more gold medals with strong performances in figure skating, biathlon, wrestling, gymnastics, and other disciplines.
Team NT also represented the cultural strength of the Northwest Territories, with the Mackenzie River Dancers of Inuvik being among the cultural performers bringing community pride to audiences throughout the Games.
“We are incredibly proud of how [Team NT] represented their communities and strengthened connections across the circumpolar North,” said McKay.
