The Government of the Northwest Territories has released an updated assessment of mineral potential across the Slave Geological Province, providing a modern, data-rich look at the potential across the region.
This study combines newly gathered data with older assessments from 2019 and 2015, to create a high-resolution ‘heat map’ of mineral potential in the area, with a focus on critical minerals that are essential to Canada’s mining sector.
“Improving geological knowledge is part of the suite of government actions to create the right conditions for responsible development, turning mineral potential into new opportunities for Northerners,” said Minister Caitlin Cleveland.
This new assessment shows that the Slave Geological Province continues to be one of Canada’s most promising regions for mineral exploration and development, with great potential for minerals like copper, lithium, and zinc, alongside the NWT’s known potential for gold and diamonds.
Over 1700 mineral showings were collected for the study, including 116 not found in previous assessments. These showings contain 19 different critical minerals.
This study strengthens the case for northern infrastructure projects, such as the Arctic Economic and Security Corridor, since they will provide increased access to the Slave Geological Province as well as support the increased energy demands.
“Strategic infrastructure, clean energy, and strong Indigenous partnerships are what turn mineral potential into real projects, real jobs, and long-term economic security,” said Minister Caroline Wawzonek.
