N.W.T. Premier to chair Council of Federation, beginning Aug. 1

Premier R.J. Simpson will assume the Chair of the Council of the Federation on Aug. 1, according to an announcement issued by the federal government. The N.W.T. will host the next summer meeting of Premiers in July 2027.

The next Summer Meeting of Canada’s Premiers is scheduled to take place between July 14 to 15.

Premiers from Canada’s three northern territories met in late June for the Northern Premiers Forum to discuss the issues facing northern communities.

NWT Premier R.J. Simpson, Nunavut Premier John Main, and Yukon Premier Currie Dixon met in Hay River for the annual forum.

Leading the topics of discussion were Arctic security, economic growth in the territories, energy investments, and police service agreements

The Premiers also renewed the Northern Cooperation Accord. The accord is a five-year agreement first signed in 2003 forming the basis of cooperation between territorial governments.
